John Lennon became the last of the former Beatles to have a solo no.1 when he topped the US chart for one week with "Whatever Gets You Through the Night" from his album "Walls and Bridges" (which also topped the album chart on the same day). The recording featured Elton John playing piano and organ and singing backing vocals, and when they'd finished recording it, he told Lennon that he thought it would be a chart-topper. So they took a bet on it, with Lennon agreeing to appear in concert with John if it did top the chart.
On November 28, just twelve days after it went to no.1, he kept his promise when he joined Elton on stage and they performed three songs together: "I Saw Her Standing There," "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" and "Whatever Gets You Through the Night".
