Two songs from the Cliff Richard movie "Summer Holiday" - released as a double 'A' side - topped the British chart for the first of three weeks. They were "The Next Time" and "Bachelor Boy", a song which proved to be a prophetic theme song for him.
Cliff wrote "Bachelor Boy" in less than two hours when it was discovered that the completed film was several minutes too short and needed another song to pad it out. Although Cliff co-wrote several other hits, this was his only no.1 credit as a writer.
Cliff's continued bachelorhood was later to cause much speculation about his sexuality - speculation that he accepted with resignation. "Of course I've heard stories that I must be a homosexual because I've never married," he said. "That's terrible, but there's nothing I can do about it. People must do and think and say whatever they want to. As long as I know the truth, that's all that matters." (Source: The History of Rock, Day by Day)
