Bahamas-born Emile Ford was the first black male act to top the UK chart when he and The Checkmates went to no.1 for six-weeks with their first - and biggest - hit, a revival of the 1916 vaudeville song "What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For?". The song was written by Joseph McCarthy, Howard Johnson and Jimmy Monaco and was first recorded 42 years earlier in 1917 by Ada Jones and Billy Murray. (Source: The History of Rock, Day by Day)
