Bruce Hornsby & The Range had their biggest success when they topped the US chart for the only time for 1 week with their first hit "The Way It Is". Winners of the Best New Artist Grammy Award, they were to have just two more Top Ten hits, "Mandolin Rain", which went to no.4 the following year and "The Valley Road", which reached no.5 in 1988. Written by Bruce Hornsby and his brother John Hornsby, it made explicit reference to the American Civil Rights Movement. This song was heavily sampled by Tupac Shakur in his song, "Changes" from 1998. (Source: Wikipedia & The History of Rock Day by Day)
