Smokey Robinson & The Miracles had their only US no.1 when they topped the chart for one week with "The Tears of a Clown". Written and produced by Robinson, Henry Cosby and Stevie Wonder, it was not one of the group's favourite recordings and was not originally considered for release as a single in America. However, it had been released in Britain where it gave them their only UK no.1 two months earlier and this success prompted a change of mind.
The song is an international multi-million seller and a 2002 Grammy Hall of Fame inductee. Its success caused Miracles lead singer, songwriter, and producer Smokey Robinson, who had announced plans to leave the act, to stay until 1972.
