Berry Gordy Jr.'s Motown organisation had its first US no.1 when The Marvelettes topped the chart for one week with "Please Mr. Postman" on the Tamla label. The song was written by Motown's founder Berry Gordy Jr., Brian Holland, who later formed part of the hugely successful Holland/Dozier/Holland songwriting and production team, and Robert Bateman. The Song was later recorded by the Beatles and recorded on their album "With the Beatles" and was also a US no.1 hit for The Carpenters who topped the chart in 1975 with their version of the song.
