Despite the condemnation of many critics who thought that the band should not have released a ballad, Styx topped the US chart with "Babe" for the first of two weeks to give the Chicago group their only no.1. Written by the group's leader and keyboard player Dennis de Young for his wife, it was inspired by the pain he felt having to be separated from her for long periods while touring with the band. Their biggest-selling and most memorable hit, it was to peak at no.6 in the UK. (Source: The History of Rock Day by Day)
