Steam topped the US chart for the first of two weeks with "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye", the song which became the anthem for the Chicago White Sox. Steam didn't actually exist as a group and the song was recorded by Gary De Carlo with Dale Frashuer and producer Paul Leka at Mercury Records (all former members of Connecticut group, The Chateaus).
It ws never taken very seriously, to the extent that they didn't even bother to write proper lyrics for it, padding it with the repetitive "na na na na, hey hey hey" chorus. Leka considered it an embarrassment but Mercury's A&R head Bob Reno thought it was a worthwhile recording and arranged for it to be released on the subsidiary Fontana label. Nobody on the recording wanted their names associted with it however, so they came up with the fictitious name Steam.
Following the song's success, Leka put together a group and called them Steam, but De Carlo still refused to have anything to do with it.
