With no less than ten Top Ten hits - either on his own or with Wings - including three no.2's ("Another Day", "Silly Love Songs", and "Let 'Em In"), Paul McCartney finally topped the British chart for the first time as a non-Beatle when "Mull of Kintyre" went to no.1 for nine weeks.
Inspired by the Kintyre Peninsular eleven miles from McCartney's home in Campbell Town, the song was co-written by McCartney and Denny Laine. It went on to sell over two million copies and replace The Beatles' "She Loves You" as Britain's best-selling single. Laine subsequently sold his share of the song to McCartney when he fell on hard times.
