The New Vaudeville Band - or, more precisely, songwriter Geoff Stephens backed by session musicians - topped the US chart for three weeks with "Winchester Cathedral", a song written b Stephens and sung by him through a megaphone to achieve that nasal, "old-fashioned" effect. An actual New Vaudeville Band was subsequently assembled (but without Geoff Stephens) to capitalise on the song's success, touring and recording, and they had three more hits with "Peek-a-Boo", "Finchley Central" and "Green Street Green".
"Winchester Cathedral", which peaked at no.4 on the UK chart, subsequently won the Grammy Award as Best Contemporary Rock 'n' Roll Recording. The other nominees that year were The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby", The Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations", The Association's "Cherish", The Monkees' "Last Train to Clarksville" and The Mamas & The Papas' "Monday, Monday".
