Former gospel singer Sam Cooke, who had been fired as lead singer of The Soul Stirrers after recording the secular song "Lovable" under the pseudonym Dale Cook, topped the US chart for the only time in his career when "You Send Me" went to no.1 for the first of two weeks. The song which he wrote himself, was produced by former Specialty Records A&R man "Bumps" Blackwell, who had persuaded him to follow the pop route, and who'd had him signed to the Keen label after he'd been dumped by both the Soul Stirrers and specialty.
Since its release, the song has become a landmark record of the soul genre, which Cooke helped create. It was named as one of the 500 most important rock and roll recordings by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 2005, the song was voted no.115 by representatives of the music industry and press in Rolling Stone magazine's The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
