George Michael's live recording of "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" with Elton John topped the UK chart for two weeks. When George Michael's "Cover to Cover" tour opened at London's Wembley Stadium in March the previous year, Elton John paid him a surprise visit backstage and they agreed to surprise the fans with an unexpected entrance by John during Michael's performance of the song - a number already included in his set.
The duet was recorded (Michael's introduction and the audience's delighted reaction when Elton appeared can be clearly heard on the record) and, released as a single, it went to the top of the British chart for the first of two weeks. Elton John was wary of releasing the recording as a single, but Michael felt it had potential and went ahead, donating the proceeds to various charities including ones for Aids, children and education.
