Diana Ross & The Supremes (as they were now officially billed) topped the US chart for the eleventh time (but for the first time with a song not written by Holland-Dozier-Holland) when "Love Child" went to no.1 for the first of two weeks. It was also the group's first no.1 without founder member Florence Ballard, who had been fired the previous year and replaced by Cindy Birdsong.
