The Beatles topped the US chart for one week with a double-sided single for the first time when "Come Together" / "Something" - which had been something of a disappointment in the UK where it peaked at a lowly no.4 - went to no.1 for one week. "Come Together" was to create plagiarism problems for John Lennon with Chuck Berry, while "Something" - the first George Harrison song to be released as a Beatles A-side single - went on to become a classic.
"Come Together", one of John's favourite compositions, was inspired by his friend Timothy Leary who planned to run for Governor of California against Ronald Reagan and had coined the slogan "Come together and join the party".
Unfortunately, the song John wrote was a fair copy of Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me" and this led to protracted legal wrangling which was eventually settled when John agreed to record some of Berry's songs ("You Can't Catch Me" and "Sweet Little Sixteen") on his 1975 album, "Rock 'n' Roll".
